Iran-UAE Exchange at BRICS Meet Highlights Strains

Araghchi said that Netanyahu's message revealed what was conveyed by Iran's security services to the leadership and said that those colluding with Israel will be held to account

New Delhi:A reported exchange between Iran and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) at the BRICS foreign ministers’ meeting in New Delhi on Thursday highlighted differences within the grouping ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the UAE.

According to international media reports, Iranian foreign minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi accused the UAE of involvement in military operations against Iran during the meeting. There was no official confirmation from India.

The remarks followed recent tensions after the UAE denied a claim by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of a secret visit to the Gulf country during the Iran conflict. Araghchi had earlier said “those colluding with Israel to sow division will be held to account.”

Iranian state media quoted Araghchi as saying, “I didn't name the UAE in my (BRICS) statement for the sake of unity. But the truth is that the UAE was directly involved in the aggression against my country. When the attacks started, they didn't even issue a condemnation.”

He also said, “We must live side by side in peace, and this requires peaceful relations and complete understanding between the two countries.”

The reported remarks were made in response to comments by the UAE representative at the meeting.

The development comes amid ongoing tensions in the region following attacks involving Iran, the US and Israel, with no resolution yet to the conflict.
