Key Points from First Round of Iran-US Talks
Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi hailed the "major progress" achieved with the help of mediators Pakistan and Qatar

BURGENSTOCK, Switzerland: The first round of high-stakes talks between Iran and the United States concluded in Switzerland's Burgenstock on Monday, with both sides agreeing on a roadmap toward a final agreement within 60 days and launching technical negotiations to continue throughout the week.
Roadmap to Final Deal Agreed
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi described the discussions as having achieved "major progress", while mediators Pakistan and Qatar said the two sides had agreed on a framework for advancing negotiations aimed at ending the wider Middle East conflict. The High-Level Committee established by Tehran and Washington agreed on a roadmap to reach a final deal within 60 days, with technical talks continuing this week.
Lebanon 'De-Confliction Cell' Created
A key outcome of the talks was the creation of a Lebanon de-confliction cell involving Iran, the United States and Lebanon, facilitated by Pakistan and Qatar, to ensure adherence to the cessation of military operations in Lebanon. The mechanism comes as recent clashes between Israel and the Iran-backed Hezbollah threatened to undermine the fragile peace process. Araghchi called the initiative the "first real test" of the agreement.
Hormuz Communication Line Established
The parties also agreed to establish a direct communication line to prevent incidents and misunderstandings in the Strait of Hormuz and ensure the safe passage of commercial vessels during the 60-day negotiation period. The strategic waterway has remained a major concern for global energy markets amid regional tensions.
Iran Seeks Sanctions Relief
Araghchi said progress had also been made on easing restrictions on Iran's oil and petrochemical exports, lifting blockades and releasing some frozen Iranian assets, though these measures were not specifically mentioned in the joint statement issued by Pakistan and Qatar.
Pakistan and Qatar Play Key Mediation Role
The mediators pledged to continue facilitating discussions in a constructive atmosphere, expressing hope that the negotiations would lead to a comprehensive and lasting agreement. Araghchi credited the breakthrough to the "tireless" mediation efforts of Pakistan and Qatar.
