British MPs raise concern over violence against Hindus in Bangladesh

Amid escalating violence against the minority Hindu community in Bangladesh, two British Members of Parliament (MPs), including Indian-origin former Home Secretary Priti Patel, raised the issue in the UK Parliament on Monday. The MPs called for urgent action and demanded a statement from UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy regarding the ongoing situation in the Muslim-majority Asian nation.

The violence against Hindus in Bangladesh has intensified in recent weeks, with reports of attacks on temples, homes, and individuals. Hindu communities in several parts of the country have faced widespread violence, prompted by allegations of desecration of religious symbols and escalating sectarian tensions.

Priti Patel, who is a member of the Conservative Party and has been vocal about issues concerning religious minorities, condemned the attacks and stressed the need for the UK government to take a firm stand. "The international community must speak out against the persecution of religious minorities in Bangladesh," Patel said in Parliament. "The UK has a responsibility to stand up for the rights of Hindus and other vulnerable communities facing violence."

Patel was joined by another MP, who echoed similar sentiments, calling the violence "unacceptable" and urging the Foreign Secretary to hold the Bangladesh government accountable. They also demanded that the UK government press Bangladesh to take immediate steps to protect its Hindu population and ensure the safety and security of all religious minorities.

In response to the MPs’ concerns, Foreign Secretary David Lammy acknowledged the gravity of the situation and assured Parliament that the UK government was monitoring the developments closely. "We are deeply concerned about the violence against the Hindu community in Bangladesh and are in contact with the Bangladesh government regarding these attacks," Lammy stated. He added that the UK was committed to supporting efforts to safeguard religious freedom and human rights worldwide.

The British MPs' intervention comes at a time when the international community has been increasingly critical of Bangladesh's handling of religious violence. Rights groups have also raised alarms over the growing intolerance toward religious minorities, particularly Hindus, who make up about 8-10% of the country's population.

This latest episode of violence follows several similar incidents in the past, where Hindu temples, homes, and individuals have been targeted by extremist groups. Bangladesh, under its secular constitution, guarantees religious freedom, but critics argue that rising religious intolerance and political factors have exacerbated the situation.

The UK Parliament’s focus on this issue signals growing international pressure on Bangladesh to address religious violence and protect its minority communities, especially amid concerns over the safety of Hindus during religious festivals and events. The situation continues to draw global attention as activists and foreign governments call for stronger measures to combat religious persecution.
