Coca-Cola Recalls Drinks in Europe Due To Higher Levels Of Chlorate

Premier soft-drink firm Coca-Cola has on Monday recalled its drinks in some countries of Europe as they contain unsafe levels of 'chlorate' in them.

The recall has been focused on Luxembourg, Belgium, and the Netherlands, the company said in a statement.
However, five product lines that were already shipped to Britain by December 2024, have been sold, the statement added. Nevertheless, majority of unsold products have been withdrawn from shelves, while the company is still making efforts to withdraw the rest.
"The majority of unsold products had been withdrawn from shelves and the company was in the process of withdrawing the rest," AFP reported.
The AFP report also claimed that higher levels of Chlorate were identified in Coca-Cola’s production facility in north-west Belgium’s Ghent during routine testing.
As per the Belgium branch of Coca-Cola's international bottling and distribution operation, the affected product brands include Coke, Sprite, Tropico, Minute Maid, and Fanta.
When chlorine-based disinfectants are used in water treatment and food processing, the chemical chlorate is produced. Exposure to higher levels of chlorate can cause health issues, particularly in children and infants, the BBC reported.
A company spokesperson however downplayed the risk for consumers. "Independent expert analysis concluded that any associated risk for consumers is very low," he told the BBC.
Moreover, the multinational-company stated that it had not received any consumer complaints in Great Britain and that it had "notified the authorities about the matter and will continue to collaborate with them."
"We do not have a precise figure, but it is clear that it is a considerable amount," Coca-Cola said on the issue of amounts of drinks involved.
Coca-Cola claimed that it had removed most of the affected drinks from the market, emphasizing that the quality and safety of its products remain its highest priority.
