Hindu priest suspended in Canada for violent rhetoric
A priest from Brampton's Hindu Sabha Mandir was suspended after allegedly promoting violent rhetoric during clashes on November 3, which involved Khalistani protesters displaying flags. The confrontation erupted outside the temple during a consular event attended by Indian officials, quickly escalating into physical altercations.
Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown condemned the incident, emphasising the unity and peace desired by Sikh and Hindu Canadians. "Most Sikh and Hindu Canadians want harmony, not violence," he posted on X (formerly Twitter). He praised the Hindu Sabha Mandir President Madhusudan Lama for suspending the priest and applauded the Ontario Sikhs and Gurdwara Council for denouncing the violence.
Brown called for restraint, stating, "We must resist letting agitators fuel division. Law enforcement will handle the situation." Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau also condemned the incident, reaffirming every Canadian’s right to practice faith safely. India expressed deep concern over the security of Indian nationals in Canada.
Tensions have been high in Brampton since the clash, which erupted when Khalistani supporters disrupted the consular event. Videos shared online captured the intense altercations, with participants reportedly using poles during the confrontation.
