Chang Hsu is a mathematics teacher from Taiwan, whose unconventional methods have changed online learning.
Hsu made a daring decision to differentiate himself from the competition in the congested online tutoring market by starting to post videos of his maths classes on PornHub, a website known for its pornographic content. His clickbait approach worked off, bringing in nearly 3 million views and over 13,000 subscribers. This increased traffic to his premium courses and brought in an astounding 270,000 dollars (Rs 2,26,76,719) annually for him.
As per the New York Post, Chang Hsu is a seasoned mathematics tutor with a master's degree. He also has 15 years of experience in this field.
Initially, he used to post his maths lessons on YouTube but then decided to diversify his platforms.
He started uploading his calculus lessons to pornhub, in May 2020, as part of an innovative marketing strategy to showcase his teaching in unexpected places.
Several students who found his free classes on Pornhub went on to join his paid courses, demonstrating the effectiveness of his unconventional strategy.
Hsu has a verified account on Pornhub and operates under the handle changshumath666.
He cleverly repurposes the adult website under his channel slogan, "Play Hard, Study Hard," to make difficult calculus concepts understandable to a larger audience. Interestingly, many students who are trying to understand the basics of calculus now turn to his Pornhub channel as their go-to place.
"Since very few people teach math on adult video platforms, and since there are so many people who watch videos on them, I thought that if I uploaded my videos there, a lot of people would see them," the teacher told Mel Magazine while talking about his non-conventional approach.
The teacher appears wearing his signature grey hoodie and glasses in every video and solves complex mathematical problems on a green board with quiet confidence. His videos typically run for forty minutes and receive twenty thousand views each. However, according to the teacher, more than 60% of his audience watches for entertainment value rather than out of a sincere desire to understand difficult mathematical concepts.
He also admitted that he attempted to attract a wider audience by posting his maths tutorials on other adult websites. But his efforts were met with resistance. Hsu claims that because these platforms have sophisticated content moderation systems in place, they were able to quickly find and delete his non-adult, educational content.
He also said, "'People may not be interested in my videos, but they'll all know there's a teacher who teaches calculus on an adult video platform."
His choice to market his maths courses on Pornhub paid off handsomely, even after some initial setbacks. He disclosed in an interview with Focus Taiwan that he makes about 270,000 dollars a year from his online teaching activities, which currently span across several platforms. He uses the money he makes to pay his bills, cover his living expenses, and give his staff members a steady pay cheque because they are essential to his ability to create and distribute educational content on all of his platforms.
"I didn't want to teach math on Pornhub. I wanted to let the world know that I'm a teacher from Taiwan who can teach calculus well," he added further.
