Ukraine: No Grounds for Talks Now, Says Russian Envoy

New Delhi: Russian Ambassador to India Denis Alipov has stated that while Moscow remains open to negotiations with Kyiv, there is currently little basis for productive dialogue amid the ongoing Ukraine conflict. Speaking at an interaction session on Wednesday hosted by Sputnik, a Russian state-owned news agency, Alipov emphasized that discussions could only proceed if grounded in an "acceptable basis."

The interaction, focused on the potential of BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa), also saw Alipov praising the grouping as a reflection of "new global realities." He highlighted BRICS' role in countering unipolar dominance and fostering multilateral cooperation.

On the conflict, Alipov underscored Russia’s readiness for talks while reiterating its stance on Ukraine's demands, which Moscow has dismissed as unrealistic. This comes against the backdrop of continued hostilities and diplomatic deadlock between the two nations.

The ambassador’s comments reflect Russia's broader narrative about its willingness to engage diplomatically, even as it faces international criticism for its actions in Ukraine. Meanwhile, Kyiv and Western allies insist that negotiations must align with Ukraine's territorial integrity and sovereignty, creating an impasse.

The conflict, which began in February 2022, continues to reshape global geopolitical alliances, with BRICS playing an increasingly significant role as a counterweight to Western influence. The remarks from Alipov further underscore the complexities of the ongoing crisis and the challenges in finding a peaceful resolution.
