On Veli Ground in Fort Cochin, flowers are wilting under the scorching sun. Yet, the venue has turned out to be a floral carpet with numerous varieties of flowers adorning the ground.

This is the second flower show in Fort Cochin organised by Cochin Entertainment Centre. Plenty of flowers including chrysanthemums, marigolds, roses, bougainvillea, are lined up to mesmerise the visitors.

However, the main attraction of the entire show is the vegetable sculpture by Raju Kozhuvanal depicting the story of Apsara Menaka trying to seduce sage Vishwamithran. Bonsai plants and other plants are on display at the show.

“We have been receiving a good response from the crowd. We have a lot of varieties this year. Big bougainvillea plants imported from Thailand are a big attraction.

We also have vegetable stalls here. People can buy seedlings too,” says Maijo K. Augustine, proprietor of Cochin Entertainment Centre.

According to Meena, one of the visitors, the show is actually a feast for the eyes. “Though we have flower shows every year, we loved the vegetable sculpture. It is a wonderful experience,” she says as she and her friends take photographs with the sculpture.

But, the vendors are a tad disappointed. According to one vendor, this year’s sale is less compared to last year on weekdays. The flower show that began on March 1 will conclude on March 9.
