Hyderabad: Little did actor and singer Karan Oberoi know that his casual conversation with a friend about elections and voting would result in a tongue-in-cheek song by his group Band of Boys.

The Ungli Campaign is an initiative by personal networking platform Vebbler and the song is called “The Ungli song”.

Speaking to us about how it all came together, Karan says, “It’s been just two days since the song has come out on YouTube and we’re already getting a positive response. I have always felt strongly about exercising our right to vote and during a discussion with a friend, he suggested we should come up with a song.

“People have short attention spans and the idea of the song was to not only get their attention but also tell the truth without sounding preachy. Without compromising on the message, we’ve used the colloquial word ungli, we knew it would be taken in the right spirit. The song is sarcastic and tongue-in-cheek.”

Singer Shibani Kashyap too is a part of the song. Talking about working with her, Karan says, “I called up Shibani and asked if she wants to sing a song about elections. It took her less than half a second to say yes. We recorded the song after returning from a friend’s wedding.

“Right from writing the song, to shooting the video, it was all done within five days. It’s heartening to get the support of our friends from the film industry, who readily agreed to be a part of the video.”

Some of the celebrities who show their ungli in the video include actor-director Arbaaz Khan, producer Ritesh Sidhwani, Pooja Bedi, Sonu Sood, Prachi Desai, Esha Deol, TV actors Karan Grover, Rohit Roy and others.

Karan adds, “Though the song is barely two minutes long, a fun video with a serious message makes a strong connection with the youth. The last line of the song — Saaf safayi progress ke liye foreign tour kar aayenge, Saath hi saal huye freedom ko, kyon revolution layenge? conveys the anger I wanted to bring out. How our leaders go on world tours to see how cleanliness is maintained in other countries! Come on, do we really need this? It’s high time we bring about a change, I know the youth is gearing up to bring the change, we will see it this time.”
