Maharashtra medical colleges might not scrap 500 undergraduate MBBS seats: report

Mumbai:  Maharashtra medical  colleges might not scrap 500 vital undergraduate MBBS seats in public, as per official reports of  the government.

In accordance to this , fresh set of recommendations is likely to be submitted by the Medical Council of India (MCI). These recommendations are based on the fresh compliance reports by the deans of eight medical colleges to the concerned ministry by July.

As per the official reports, this move will be undertaken by medical colleges of Solapur, Sangli, Dhule, Kolhapur, Yavatmal, Nanded, Ambajogai and Latur. The ministry will announce the final intake list for the country's medical colleges by July 15.

Previously, the medical education department had  not recognized medical seats due to inadequate faculty and infrastructure in some state-run colleges, which were granted 50-100 additional seats as a one-time gesture.  Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan  had a discussion with Union Health Minister, Dr Hardh Vardhan  on this matter.

The medical education department has proposed many measures to fill up the vacancies.  In regards to building adequate infrastructure and fulfilling faculty requirement, Manisha Mhaiskar, secretary, medical education and drugs mentioned that around 50 per cent of the teaching posts that are vacant will be filled through direct recruitment drives. The department has also proposed a direct recruitment drive for associate professors and professors at least for one year.
