Kochi: For the past few months the Ice Bucket Challenge to spread awareness about ALS has been the hottest topic on social media. Indians who do not lag behind in following global trends, have taken the Ice Bucket Challenge to their heart and introduced an indigenous one, Rice Bucket Challenge for the poor of the country.
It seems everyone has been waiting for a novel idea to execute their vision. Following the footsteps of the ice and rice bucket challenges, a few aspiring minds from Kerala have come up with an eco-friendly initiative, My Tree Challenge (MTC).
“Hey all, while all these ice bucket revolution is going around, we are launching an eco revolution adding value to mother earth. Do plant a sapling and challenge others to do so, use the bucket of water for giving life to what you have planted. We can surely make this an eco revolution. Support and spread the word,” reads the status of the MTC page.
The challenge was launched by megastar Mammootty by planting a sapling on one of his shooting locations. It is believed that he has challenged actors Mohanlal and Shahrukh Khan to accept the challenge within 24 hours. Actors Fahadh Faasil and Kaniha have shown their support to MTC by sharing the status on their Facebook walls.
Along with My Tree Challenge (MTC), Mollywood celebrities have joined the rice bucket challenge too. Among them is director Ranjith Shankar who gave a bucket of rice to a man by accepting the challenge posed by actress Nyla Usha. He completed the challenge on location of his new movie Varsham.
“It is a good initiative and it has significance in the current scenario. I challenged one of my friends. Let see if he will take it or not.” Asked if he would donate to any charity, he replied, “I use to give a fair share of my films to charities. I don’t think a challenge is required to do charity.”
Not only celebrities, political figures also have participated in the sea of challenge. Sindhu Joy has taken the Ice Bucket Challenge. Newbie Hibi Eden has taken the rice bucket challenge.
“I’m accepting the Rice Bucket Challenge from Soothika and donating a bucket of rice to Srimati Kochu Rani, from Kalamasseri, a BPL family member. And I nominate Thrikkakkara MLA Benny Behnan, Raju P. Nair Leader of ‘Say NO to Harthal Movement’ and Sudheer Mohan of Wipro. They have to donate a bucket of rice to any needy person/organisation in their locality or buy medicines worth Rs 100 at the nearest Government Hospital within 24 hours,” wrote Hibi Eden on his wall. If the trend continues, we could witness more interesting revolutions like this to change the face of society.
