Chennai: From Priyanka Chopra’s Varun Bahl black crop top and palazzo ensemble to B’town’s fashion icon Sonam Kapoor making an appearance in Parul Bharghava’s Mirage collection, the crop top seems to be everyone’s favourite. And Chennai isn’t behind, when it comes to flaunting that flat midriff. The crop top has flooded most Chennai stores and wardrobes of fashionistas as well.
Be it college-goers sporting a laid back and casual look by teaming it up with denim shorts or models and actresses flaunting their fab abs by pairing it up with skirts, there are many ways to experiment with this ensemble.
“Crop tops have been my most preferred attire when it comes to travelling out of station or when, I am on a trip abroad. But it was rare in Chennai,” says model Pradhayini, who was recently spotted wearing a cropped ensemble at an award show.
“It’s true that of late its popularity has grown with Chennaiites and I think it’s got to do with the availability. There are many brands and fashion outlets that cater to people who want to try different things,” she says. Pradhayini adds that she prefers to keep her crop top look for events and parties only. While crops maybe the current rage, it isn’t an easy look to pull off.
There are a few do’s and don’ts to follow. “Someone who has a heavy bust and wears it, does not present a pleasing sight at all,” says city-based stylist Shireen. “But if they are confident of pulling it off, then a loose crop top may work for them.”
Actress Shriya Saran concurs. “Crop tops look great on someone with a long torso. Although I prefer longer tops, I have worn crops a few times as well. Amongst the other K'town actresses, I think actress Samantha carries off that look really well,” she says.
