Messy plait is the new trend
The hairstyle goes with both Indian and western attires
Mumbai: The messy plait look is the current trend. It’s hassle free, doesn’t require much time, and can be pulled off with élan if paired with the right outfit. And who better to get inspired from than our B-town celebrities. Joining the list is actress Deepika Padukone, who sports it in Happy New Year. “Many B’town celebrities have been sporting it on red carpet. The look can be sported with both Indian and western attires. It also goes well with a metro print sari.
Crop top with high-waist black pants or evening gowns with high slit the look can be paired with anything that’s modern and elegant,” suggests designer Pria Kataria Puri. She adds, “When you are sporting a messy plait, carrying it well has got more to do with attitude and less to do with style. The look suits women who have a petite look and woman with larger upper body should totally avoid it.”
The look needs to be carried off with the right outfit, since it doesn’t go with anything and everything, cautions designer Rohit Verma. “Depending on the event you are going for, you can pair it with long Anarkali, short kurta and chudidar, denim and a well-fitting shirt or with a long skirt and a crop top. The look can also be sported for parties,” says Rohit. Hairstylist Dorris Godambe feels that the look is a favourite since it is hassle free. “Braided hair or the messy plait, as you call it, looks very elegant and a lot of Bollywood actress like Priyanka, Madhuri Dixit and Sonam Kapoor have sported it in the recent past. It is not necessary to have nicely blow-dried hair so it suits our celebs who usually have tight schedules.”
She also adds that the look is for people between ages 16-45, and not everybody can carry it off. Hairstylist Jawed Habib says, “Before you braid your hair, make sure it is shampooed well since this gives a softer look. Also, don’t put too much of pressure while you braid. Make sure you use a hair serum, since it would leave the hair with a softer look. For a much funkier look, Jawed asks to pair it with highlights. “One should pair it with highlights to get the funky look. Since Indians are not very experimental to use green or blue, I guess a coffee brown or Khaki-gold colour highlights would give an edge to the look.” Make the most before it goes out of style!
