Going ahead with Sridevi: Ram Gopal Varma
Ram Gopal Varma believes that a name cannot be copyrighted
According to Ram Gopal Varma, there seems to be a misconception that the film Sridevi is based on the crush he had for the actress.
In a reply to the legal notice, RGV said, “The title has been given to us by the Andhra Pradesh Film Chamber which is the authorised body for such deeds. Moreover, films titled Sridevi have released 3 times in last two decades.
“The film was earlier titled Saavitri but we changed it not for reasons of the protests as reported but due to a miscommunication on the production unit’s part, who did not acquire the title from the previous right holder, who later refused to give it.
“I am deeply hurt by this action of Sridevi, whom I admired and respected. I strongly believe that she was influenced by others with vested interests. I am going ahead with the title Sridevi because I am well within my legal and moral rights to use it. Legal, because a name cannot be copyrighted, and the film has nothing to do with Sridevi, as the protagonist is not an actress; moral, because I will never do anything to degrade or demean actress Sridevi.”
