Dramatic Circle of Hyderabad marked their 50th anniversary with yet another play (their third this year), that encourages new talent on stage. Calangute Cocktails, which had two shows at Lamakaan, had the audience in splits; and the ‘newbies’ delivered their best performances. The four short plays are separate tales set in Room no. 302 at a resort in Goa and was adapted from Neil Simon’s California Suite series.
“We do this to promote new talent. If they get a break in a major production, they might not be trusted with a meaty role. So, we made a conscious effort to give each person a role, where they can prove themselves,” says Pranava Singhal, the director of DCH. He adds, “It also serves as an inspiration for others, who want to act in theatre, but don’t know where and how to begin.”
Syed Shoeb, a 20-year-old, who marked his theatre debut, impressed the audience with the third play: We Two and the Hooker Too. The title too was suggested by him. “When DCH trusted us, the ‘newbies’, with huge roles in the play, we wanted to give more than 100 per cent, so that we didn’t fall short.” Though Shoeb, who is in his engineering third year, BITS Pilani Hyderabad, had to travel for more than 25 kms for rehearsals, he had no complaints as his passion kept him going. The cast of 13 people included students and working professionals, who would meet after work and college hours, or sometimes make time early in the morning, for rehearsals.
