Is the Xiaomi Redmi 1S one of the first outsider smartphone to get the Android Lollipop? Well, not an official one as yet.

Yes you have read right—the Xiaomi Redmi 1S has got the Android Lollipop v5.0.1 operating system, but not from Xiaomi or MIUI, officially.

A developer on the MIUI forum has managed to port an Android Lollipop v5.0.1 ROM for the Xiaomi Redmi 1S.

Atyant, a developer with the MIUI beta team, has posted an unofficial Mokee ROM. However, it is still buggy and he has officially posted that the SIM cards don’t work for now. There are other helping developers who are working on fixing the issue. The developer has managed to get most of the functionalities working on the Redmi 1S with Lollipop. He stated on the OP as below:

“Mokee unofficial based on Android OS 5.0.1 Lollipop. I'm just sharing this ROM all CREDITS to the developers.”

The Mokee Lollipop ROM for the Xiaomi Redmi 1S is in beta mode and developers are working their way into releasing the first final version, which will be stable and ready for daily use.

Those interested in trying out the Lollipop ROM for their Redmi 1S handsets can follow this link. However, you must be warned that that rooting and flashing a firmware on your handset could render it useless if you do not follow the rules and proper procedures. You can also void all warranty on the product by doing so. Lastly, you should take backups of all your data before proceeding.

Hopefully, once the Redmi 1S has been tested by many users with the new unofficial ROM and report back any bugs to be ironed out as soon as possible. This ROM could turn into an official ROM thereafter, by Xiaomi MIUI team.
