Wetland experts worry about floating restaurant at Ulsoor Lake
They suggest that the government reconsider its decision on floating restaurant and its location
Bengaluru: The BBMP and Tourism Department are planning to create the first floating restaurant in Bengaluru. Environmentalists have warned that the restaurant could harm the ecology of the lake. They suggest that the government reconsider its decision on restaurant and its location.
The government had announced plans for a floating restaurant at Ulsoor Lake, during the Budget session and the Tourism Department was given the responsibility to establish the plan. The Tourism Department said the restaurant will be built on a floating raft and will have about 15-20 tables. Soon tenders will be floated by the Karnataka State Tourism Development Corporation (KSTDC).
Wetland experts say that the lake is small for any kind of experimentation and that any structure on the surface of the water will cause harm to the lake’s ecology. Dr T V Ramachandra, from the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) said, a structure built over a lake blocks sunlight, which is essential to maintain the ecology of the lake.
“Another problem that needs to be addressed is the disposal of waste from the restaurant. The lake is being used by the Army and the issue of sewage entering the lake needs to be addressed. The high court has not permitted any structures to be built over any lakes. Similar plans of a floating restaurant at Hebbal Lake, were stopped.” said Dr Ramachandra.
Additional Chief Secretary for Tourism Aravind Jadhav said the department is holding meetings with BBMP and Army. All permissions are required, till then the KSTDC will not float tenders. “The government has given its approval to a floating restaurant. There are similar models abroad and the floating restaurant will attract tourists.” he said.
