“It was difficult for me to get out of bed each morning. I was consumed in a spiral of negative thoughts. I felt everything was doomed for me.”

Depression, as per the common norm in the society, is not a state of mind. It is not a mood that one can overcome with a good night’s sleep. This ‘disease’ is like a black hole. It is a fungal infection that keeps spreading if ignored at first.

The woman in the video has to say just that. She has herself suffered from depression and she was strong enough to accept the fact and seek help. “It is a normal human tendency. If there is something wrong with your mind, it is very difficult to come to terms with it,” says Parul Sharma.

It is very difficult for the society to understand the person who is depressed. Anywhere in the world, people think that depression is something that is easy to come out of. Since the term is so commonly used, many fail to understand how it feels like when someone is actually going through the same. “People need to deal with this issue with much more sensitivity.  Support from friends and family is very important when one is going through this condition,” she mentions.

“One should be concerned when their sadness goes on for weeks. They feel trapped in the shell of negative thinking and it is impossible to break free.” One needs to believe that depression is something that is just a condition and will pass. There are many stages of depression. If one thinks one is suffering through the same, they need to seek professional help. Counsellors might ask you a number of questions to diagnose if you are clinically depressed. “Once you seek professional help, like I did, things start getting better and you start converting your negative thoughts to positive. It is easy to get out of the bouts of sadness. I feel much better now,” says Sharma, as she is on her way to kill the demon.

Nearly 36 per cent of the people in our country are suffering from depression. It will be easy for such people to get over this condition if others are supportive. With professional help and support, depression can be easily battled with.
