Mumbai: He’s the current favourite on Instagram and among dubsmash fans thanks to his “Chutki and shopkeeper” videos, but for actor and comedian Gaurav Gera, who was also seen recently in Comedy Nights with Kapil, it’s nothing new. One of the first from the comedy scene to have a YouTube channel, in 2005, Gaurav talks about the new-found fame of his videos and more.

When you ask him about the famous 15-second videos, his first reaction is, “Word has reached Hyderabad too?” He laughs and adds, “I started making videos in 2005. I didn’t want to have a clichéd comedy channel. I thought I had a weird sense of humour. I’m surprised that this random take has been appreciated by so many.”

In his 15-second videos on Instagram, Gaurav gets into different characters, which are all related to the central character, a woman named Chutki. Talking about it, he says, “I create different situations. So, I don’t run out of jokes. When I started, I took two-three months to think about what I could create.”

Talking about the popularity, he says, “Actress Kavita Kaushik did a dubsmash to one of my videos and that alone has 6 lakh views. The original video has some 30,000 views,” adding, “I have been getting messages even from Nepal and Pakistan.” And he thanks Instagram for this. “What’s digital goes global,” he says.
