After designing award-wining costumes for Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone in their film Goliyon Ki Raasleela RamLeela, Anju Modi has worked hard to give the Bajirao Mastani trio (Deepika, Ranveer, Priyanka Chopra) a distinctive look of this season.

Since Deepika’s character is that of a Muslim girl from Persia, Anju knew she needed to keep their wardrobes more “Sufi-influenced Indian”. Doing
research from places such Varanasi, Hyderabad, Aurangabad, Nagpur and Pune, she developed an idea of the rich cultural heritage the characters’ clothes would need to depict. “I was immersed in the delicate, fragile, Persian culture. Deepika’s mother in the film was married to a Hindu raja so she essays the character of someone who is both Persian and Hindu. Hence I filled her wardrobe with sharaaras, kurtis that are more similar to the Muslim attire,” Anju said.

While Deepika will don salwar-suits, Priyanka Chopra on the other hand will be clad in a Maharashtrian sari. “Priyanka plays the role of a Maharashtrian Brahmin’s wife so she is wearing Malwari saris with those Maharashtrian naths and hair ornaments. It’s a typical 16th-17th century way of dressing,” Anju explained.

Ranveer Singh’s look is what has caught everyone’s attention with him sporting a hat ever since he let go of those long tresses for SLB’s magnum opus. “Since it’s a historical film Ranveer will be wearing adhalakhas, Bolivian costumes and old world museum pieces,” she said.

The designer also feels that shararas worn by Deepika will soon be a trend. “People will go mad about the colour combinations. The kind of colour mixing that I have done for the film is something that will be an eye catcher!” she further added.

When asked about how “nit-picky” Bhansali was during the entire process of developing the costumes, Anju said, “Being the director of the film, he has to be a little nit picky but we used to share our creative ideas and come up with a common solution to create what we think would work the best.” Anju has previewed a similar line, which she will be showcasing at the Vogue Wedding Show, which will take place in Delhi from August 7-9.
