It’s a gown! It’s a saree! It’s both! If you’re looking for a flattering silhouette and comfortable easy breezy dressing without a fuss, and still look trendy, then saree gowns are probably just what every fashionista is looking for. Indian couturiers like Monisha Jaising, Varun Bahl, Masaba Gupta, Tarun Tahiliani, Anamika Khanna and others have been making attempts by trying out innovative drapes to the six-yard wonder, but their tryst with the saree gown designs, tops our style charts.

The saree gowns add a dramatic effect, maintaining the structure of the bodice. Quirky sarees have emerged as a dominant trend this season. It takes about 120 seconds to prepare instant coffee, but just about 60 seconds to become an instant diva! Neeta Rajendran of Sakhi states, “We have experimented with the quintessential Indian saree and created The Insta saree; which is a one piece constructed unit with blouse attached and is crafted using fine quality materials like lycra blended silk, French lace, flowing net contrasted by brocades and glamorous sequin as highlights. The saree wraps snugly around the body. There is no draping, just zip it up and you are ready in 30 seconds!”

It’s perfect for young women who don’t have the time or the skill of draping the six yards and is an effortless embodiment of elegance. Some of the hues you can choose are rustic red, emerald green, classic black, bold gold or zestful shades of pink, orange and aqua. Designer Reshma Kunhi adds, “One need not know how to drape a saree, as it is completely stitched in the form of a gown and with crepes and georgeottes, the lycra saree gowns are in vogue.” Designer Jyoti Sachdev Iyer agrees, saying, “Indians love Western culture and a saree gown is the perfect way to bring a western touch to your garment, yet stay strong to your Indian roots. Besides, anyone can rock a saree gown – 16 or 60.” Susan Fernandes of Astara effuses, “Saree gowns if designed well could be graceful and aesthetic. If I had to design a saree gown, it would be of pure silk with a beautiful seamless fall. I would choose a single solid colour or gradually shaded and give it a 1920’s theme to complete the look.”
