City wakes up to apologies
Here is why top leaders have been saying ‘I’m sorry’
Why are leaders like Gandhiji, Jawaharlal Nehru, Dr B.R. Ambedkar and Subhash Chandra Bose apologising? If that is your question, after seeing graffiti of these leaders around the city, then we have an answer.
City artists Swathi and Vijay are the minds behind the images of these leaders, that are currently creating a buzz. And the artists wanted to make a point.
Making a point: Graffiti found near Jubilee Hills; (Right) An art work of Dr B.R. Ambedkar on a metro pillar near Hitec
Vijay says, “One of the things Swathi and I noticed is that, despite the amount of errors that politicians make, no one apologises to the people. Even great leaders like Gandhiji, Nehru etc. have made mistakes but they haven’t apologised... so we thought why not set an example, by using these leaders.”
He adds, “This was just our way of showing the future generation that it is absolutely okay to accept mistakes, but you need to apologise as well... it only makes you more humble in the eyes of the people.”
Out of the 12 art works, 11 were created around Hitec City and one was done near Jubilee Hills. “We painted over walls and even the pillars of Metro. The artwork at Jubilee Hills took us about 12 hours to complete and the rest (single pieces of graffiti) took us about 15 minutes each,” says Vijay who along with his wife Swathi started painting at 5 pm on August 12 and completed the work by the early hours of August 13.
