If you thought that only Hollywood beauties were rocking the cape on red carpets globally, think again! The cape has picked up momentum in Chennai as well. The colour palette is bigger, the cuts are better and the style quotient is at a new high. Saloni Shah, a fashion consultant, totally pulled off an innovative cape look at the launch of her spa recently. She paired a mint green cape with golden cigarette pants and golden heels that were perfectly in sync with both the tone of the fabrics and the occasion.
“For the evening, I wanted to incorporate a fusion look that was apt for the evening and yet made a style statement. So I opted for a cape, as they have always been in vogue. I had picked it up at an exhibition in the city and enhanced its look by pairing it with golden pants. The cape is however not stitched into the outfit. One can pair it with either a short gold skirt or with palazzos,” explained Saloni.
As good as the outfit sounds, one has to be careful about not going over the top. Fashion designer, Bandana Narula points out that minimalist accessories are the way to go. “Capes do not go well with all dresses. One can pair them only with skirts, short dresses or pants. The accessories must be limited to ear cuffs or a western neckpiece that is longer in length. Capes give one the dressy look, and so are ideal only for formal evenings or luncheons,” she said.
Preetha Anandhan, a Chennai-based model, said that the cape look is ideal for Chennai’s climate as they are a great replacement for jackets or shrugs. “Capes that are a little long, say waist length, add that extra zing to one’s look. At times when you want to experiment with your plain white dress and you’re bored with the same old jewellery or jackets, a cape can fit in perfectly, and it’s comfortable for the climate as well.”
