Debutant director Ranjit Jeyakodi is excited about directing Vijay Sethupathi and Gayathrie Shankar in Mellisai. “This emotional thriller was named Mellisai (meaning melody) since the hero, played by Vijay Sethupathi, is a music director and the heroine, Gayathrie, a violin teacher,” says Ranjit. An associate of director Ram, he was determined to do movies from his Loyola days where he was studying Visual Communication.
Talking about Mellisai, Ranjit says, “Since a melody is something that you want to hear over and over, we wanted the film to be something you can watch repeatedly. Newbie Sam CS is the music director. I would say, his music is a mix of both Raja sir’s and AR Rahman’s. The music is definitely a big plus for the movie.”
So, how did he convince Vijay Sethupathi to act in his film? “When I narrated the script to him, he was impressed. I think he was more interested in the story than who would direct it. He has no qualms about any new director filming his project. Mellaisai will show Vijay Sethupathi in a different light. He usually does only rural get-ups, but in this film he’s playing a modern character,” he quips. When asked about Vijay’s beard, Ranjith laughs, “Of course, but not a rugged look. He’s seen with a stylish beard and outfits. The film has a lot of surprises in store for the audience. There’s not much scope for romance in the film, per se. In fact, Vijay Sethupathi learnt some keyboard playing for this film. What an involvement he has in any role. He moulded himself to the character,” Ranjit tells us.
So, where did they shoot the movie? “We shot extensively in and around Chennai. The thing is, we have shown familiar places but shot in different angles, so they would appear new to you,” he signs off.
