It’s time to doll up and step out in your glamorous Indian avatar for the magnificent celebrations ahead. As we get set to usher in the festive season, here are some tips from city based fashion designers on what will work best for this season. You can play around with the traditional Indian outfits like anarkalis and six yards and add trendy variations like Sonam Kapoor.
Try the saree gown, dhoti saree, or get edgy with crop tops for lehengas. Jayanthi Ballal, designer, Needle Works likes to blend modern with traditional. “Everybody wants to be in traditional outfits during festivals. But for festivals like Ganesh Chaturthi, Eid, Dasara and Diwali, women should stick to what is comfortable. You can pair a unique and heavy choli (blouse) with chiffons, georgettes and crepes. The traditional yet contemporary look is what’s trending these days. If you want to look your stylish best this festive season, then wear what is easy and comfortable,” says Jayanthi, who organises the annual fashion event called the Mysore Fashion Week.

Anjali shares, “Festive fashion is predominantly a happy look. I find two types of happy clothing in India-one during weddings, and one during festivals! By happy clothing I mean a plethora of cheerful rich Indian palette of colours, style inspired silhouettes, aesthetically done details and stunning embellishments. I also find girls and women alike accessorising their ensembles absolute gorgeously with maang tikkas, crystal wreaths, waist ornaments, funky crystal anklets and statement making finger rings. And if the embellishment on the garment is not in your face, and yet essence driven, you’re ready to conquer the festive season!”
Ravina Belani of Ravina’s likes to welcome back all bright hues this season. High on trend, according to her is, “All bright shades are back for this festive season. Lovely long outfits with flowy silhouettes in georgettes are in vogue. Lace and net are still the hot favourites! Also tunics which can be worn with palazzos, tights, churidars or cigarette pants also look great when worn with the right festive accessories. The colours that are in are oranges, magenta, fuchsia, red, royal blue and yellow teamed with mirror work and gota work.”
