Meet Bangladesh’s first lesbian comic character – Dhee

The comic character was created to raise awareness about LGBT issues

In what seems as a bold effort to break taboos surrounding homosexuality, Bangladesh has got its first lesbian comic character called Dhee. Dhaka’s British Council hosted the project’s launch on September 5.

Through comics about Dhee – a teenaged, bespectacled and curly-haired girl – Bangladesh’s LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) community aims to create awareness among the general public about their issues.

They have made boxes with 10 flashcards each, where behind each comic strip; there are general descriptions about homosexuality, heteronormativity, gender, sexuality, stereotypes and patriarchy. According to media reports, these cards will be circulated at workshops, seminars and conferences across the country soon.
