How many times have you looked at a star dazzling in a red carpet gown and thought to yourself with a sigh that no matter how much you like the look, chances that you will ever find occasion to flaunt it yourself, are rather slim? However, while occasions to wear floor sweeping ball gowns might be few in real life, red carpet fashion is almost always awash with elements which you can adapt into your daily wardrobe to give it radical new spins. While your co-workers might be questioning your sanity if you turn up to work in a bright yellow Gauri and Nainika number like Athiya Shetty did at a style award show recently, you could incorporate the colour, the unique long ruffles, the shine in her clutch and easily recreate the understated glam quotient of the whole outfit.

One of the first elements that draw your attention to an outfit like Athiya's is, of course, its colour. Yellow – let alone in a shade as bright and camera friendly as Athiya’s – is not an easy colour to pull off. The trick is to have just the right amount of yellow that you might be comfortable pulling off. City designer Krithika Venkatesh advices on keeping the complementary colours basic when you have yellow dominating your outfit. She says, “If you have yellow above your waist - for instance, in a ruffle blouse or a crop top, it is best to have a black or white high-waisted pants or skirt, below. If you are wearing a yellow skirt, then a safe option would be a black shirt or even a glossy white one. Sometimes, dark green looks great with yellow, but on the top half of the body.”
