The way you shampoo your hair, you need to shampoo your beard too

No Shave November’s here and men around the world are excited about stowing away their shaving kits for the month. The Movember movement is dedicated to raising awareness about health issues such as prostate cancer and depression.

Growing facial hair has become a hit in India too. From cricketer Shikhar Dhawan’s Rajput-esque twirled moustache to Shahid Kapoor’s bearded look in Shandaar, we’ve taken to the trend like children to candy.

However, just because you can grow a moustache and a beard doesn’t mean you should. Hyderabad-based stylist Sachin Dakoji says that men should ensure that the beard they grow matches their facial type. “For someone with an oval face, the beard should be slightly longer around the chin with slight stubble on the sides so that it elongates the face,” he says, “While for rounder faces, it should have a cut so that it gives shape to the face.”

Adding that the twirled moustache is a look people could opt for, he says, “The painter Salvadore Dali had a twirled moustache, and it’s a major inspiration for people in Europe right now — the Dali-esque moustache.”

Hairstylist Jawed Habib suggests that for beards, men should know how to use a trimmer so that they don’t look shabby. “Indians are also slightly on the darker side and so is our hair, so with a longer beard you’ll look rough,” he adds, “I’ve seen people even dyeing their beards a lighter shade, so that it stands out, which is a nice change.”

While Jawed thinks a two or three-day stubble that’s trimmed and shaped is a great look, Sachin says longer beards can be just as classy, even for the corporate world. “It’s like the ‘hippie revolution’ from the ’70s, but this is more groomed,” he laughs.

Both agree on one thing — getting your facial hair trimmed and styled by a proper stylist and actually taking his or her advice! “The only thing you need to remember is, keep it clean,” Jawed emphasises, “The way you shampoo your hair, you need to shampoo your beard too.”
