The incessant rains and ensuing chilly weather for the past week have left the city divided. While half its inhabitants are gushing about the lovely nip in the air, the rest have taken to social media to air their unhappiness over the resultant potholes, traffic snarls and general dampness all around. With #BangaloreRain trending on Twitter, it was the platform of choice for most people to express their views on the subject. While some chose to make light of the matter, others used it to vent their frustrations about being late to meetings and appointments, sending their schedules into disarray.
A certain @ThevarMurali compared the city to the original Silicon Valley. He tweeted, “If it rains in Silicon Valley water disappear in 5 min, if it rains in Indian Silicon Valley roads disappear in 5 min (sic).” @Pradykool said, “I've got to get me a bat mobile.” Some made references to the controversial Huchha Venkat who was booted out of Bigg Boss for assaulting a contestant.... “# Bangalore Rain is getting more brutal and mental than Huchha Venkat,” according to ?@iequanimous. Aneesh Vidyashankar, a well-known city-based violinist, posted a screen grab of a frozen landscape from Game of Thrones to Facebook, with the caption, “Bangalore weather right now.”
Prasanna Nagaraja too took to Facebook to say, “Hatsoff to all the brave people who made it to work today. May the Force be with you on your way back home.” However, not everyone was as humourous. “Awesome start to the week, a 40 mins commute to office took 1 hr 45 mins,” tweeted @rhari_k. Some even quoted Adele. “Set fire to the rain. Argh!,” said @wonder_bubble and others highlighted the benevolence of the unanimously detested auto drivers. “When we all crib about auto woes in #BangaloreRain, a big thanks to the nameless auto guy who gave me a free ride today!,” tweeted @nithtweets.
Practically speaking though, most citizens have accepted their fate and have made necessary adjustments to outsmart the weather. Smita Kommini, a communications professional, stays warm and dry by wearing sensible yet stylish loafers and downing copious amounts of tea. “I just bought myself a pair of shoes with fur on the inside, which keeps my feet warm and cosy,” she says. Aditya Bharadwaj, a senior consultant with n MNCaon the other hand prefers to stay warm with a heavy-duty jacket. “I bought a sturdy jacket for the travel to and from office. Also I’m making sure to leave early when I’m going anywhere to avoid getting stuck in rain-induced traffic jams,” concludes Bharadwaj.
