ChennaiMonsoon can be fun and getting drenched in rains is matchless delight, but there is also a sinister side to the season. It can lead to a plethora of health problems. With severe water logging across the city, diabetologist and expert in internal medicine Dr R. Sundararaman asks people not to ignore persistent fever or any fungal infections.

Water contamination can lead to many diseases such as amebiasis, diarrhea, cholera, dengue and fungal infections.
Also, leptospirosis, an infectious bacterial disease that causes symptoms such as fever, headache, and chills, is another disease one should watch out for, said Dr Sundararaman, senior consultant, SIMS hospital.

Hygienically prepared food, drinking boiled water, vaccination for swine flu, taking single shot to safeguard one from pneumonia are some of the measures for protection. Those living in areas marooned by water should get vaccinated for cholera and typhoid as a precaution, he said.

H1N1 shots could be given for children, elders and pregnant women, he said. He also endorses the traditional use of neem oil and turmeric, which have antifungal and anti bacterial properties.
