What does an Indian tourist on a holiday in the USA do for 20 days when she’s home alone most of the time? This is exactly what Ranjini Ramesh, a blogger and theatre person from Chennai is going through. She decided to document her 20-day stay, through a series of vlogs called 20 Days to Kill. Mundane activities combined with a generous dose of humour, quirky background scores and her expressions, make this series a perfect entertainer.
Her sojourn, plus her love for shooting videos made her come up with this idea. “I love capturing moments on camera. So I thought, this vacation would be a great opportunity to create something new everyday. I generally watch a lot of vlogs, and I have a passion for editing so I feel really comfortable expressing myself with a camera as opposed to writing,” this third year student from SSN College of Engineering says.
Speaking about why she took to making videos, she says, “Vlogging is definitely something that people in India aren’t used to — it’s something unique that they may find enjoyable and relatable as it’s coming from one Indian to another. I put in insane time and effort into editing them and keeping it interesting. Trust me, it’s not as easy as it looks,” she says adding, “But then again, it’s my passion and it’s just a way in which I present my experience to other people. In my vlogs, I try to strike a balance between making it visually appealing and keeping it fun and quirky.”
When asked if humour or sobriety is more important while making videos that are shared on public platforms, she says, “It depends on the impact you want to make on people.
Personally, social media and the performing arts should just be a means to communicate your ideas to people in a way that they can understand, regardless of whether it has a social message, if it’s sensible or is just plain entertainment.” That being said, she likes to look at the humour in any situation because there’s nothing more effective than putting a smile on someone’s face.
This vlogger has another side to her that explains the numerous facial expressions. “Yes, I am into theatre. I definitely will play a role in the production on or off stage soon,” she concludes.
