There are still two weeks for Star Wars: Episode VII — The Force Awakens to release but city students are already gearing up for the film. In most colleges semester-end exams are about to get done and movie marathons are already being planned for those living in hostels.
“Star Wars characters have always been larger than life. So of course we can’t wait for the force to awaken. The movies are perfect for a late night marathon in the hostels and we are all going to watch the previous episodes before the new film releases,” says Sriharsh Bhyravajjula, a student of IIIT-Hyderabad. And many others too are planning the same. Mitisha Gaur, a fourth-year student at Nift says, “I’m looking forward to see how new-age technology is going to take the storyline ahead. We have all read up on fan theories. A rumour is that there will be an anti-Anakin Skywalker character in this film, so yes, we are all coughing up weird stories.”
With Star Wars comes a lot of reading material, be it comic strips, novels or the hundreds of YouTube videos. Arjun Krishna Kalsy, a student at ISB says, “I started following Star Wars when I was in class VII. I learnt about the reverse chronology and was even more interested. I have read the novels, played the computer games and have even watched the fan-made discussions on YouTube.”
But at ISB, they have one problem. “Our placement sessions are on so I don’t know how I’ll be able to watch the film,” says Arjun, while his batchmate Shresth Shrivastav, says, “I think sparing three hours for the film is not a big deal. Back home, I used to have everything related to the film in my room — a light saber, Star Wars bedsheet and more.”
