US Presidential candidate Donald Trump is the poster boy of what not to say on Twitter, especially if you’re running for President. From racist comments to tweets that are just plain nasty, Trump has been guilty of running his mouth and not thinking before tweeting, on more than one occasion.

With social media making celebs more accessible to fans, we also get to see a side of our favourite stars that we otherwise wouldn’t have. Before Trump made Twitter his space of choice to share his unfiltered feelings, he was thought of as a business tycoon, with a shrewd mind and a mop of wispy hair speculated to be a wig. However,  since he announced his candidature, he has been increasingly more insulting, untrue and possibly delusional. One of the most noted examples was him calling Arianna Huffington unattractive on Twitter. “@ariannahuff in unattractive both inside and out. I fully understand why her former husband left her for a man - he made a good decision,” he tweeted.

And thanks to his flamboyant social media style, he’s been the target of many a troll, who would not like to see him taking residence at the White House, like Danny Zuker, the producer of hit TV show Modern Family, who tweeted, “@realDonaldTrump doesn’t like the show I’m on, but then we have never tested well with racist, hypocritical, multi - bankruptcy demo(graphic),” (sic) in reply to Trump who said that the maker of Modern Family is a dumb and a backward child.

Here in India, Aamir Khan made headlines when he relayed a bedroom conversation about intolerance in the country in an interview on national television. The news about his wife, Kiran Rao expressing her desire to leave the country sparked a social media furore which saw people tweeting their disdain of the couple, writing open letters and fans shifting their loyalties.

“While it is important for political figures to show exactly where they stand, so the people who are voting for them know what they’re getting themselves into, film stars, sports people and other celebs need to be careful about what they post as there are a million people who look up to them,” shares Agratha Dinakaran, a digital media strategist, based in the city.

Giving the moral police a lot of fodder was Madonna who posted a pic of her then 13-year-old son, Rocco and his friends holding bottles of alcohol with the caption,  “Let the party begin.”

“It’s important to be careful before taking to social media if you are an influential person, because you never know whom your actions might inspire,” she concludes.
