There was a time when movie buffs had to wait for a year or two, to see their favourite stars perform onscreen. However, things seem to be different now — many stars in Kollywood have shifted their mode of work into top gear. Few established as well as upcoming actors are signing back-to-back films, offering massive treats for movie enthusiasts in the coming year. From Kamal Haasan to music composer-turned-actor GV Prakash Kumar who forayed into acting this year, they have more than two or three flicks in their kitty. More over, despite struggling to release long pending films, few stars aren’t hesitant to sign the dotted lines for their future projects. Interestingly, the trend was different earlier; stars in demand used to announce or think about their next venture only after completing a film.
Kamal Haasan has Appa Amma Vilayattu, Thalaivan Irukkiran and the long pending Vishwaroopam 2 in the pipeline. Recently there was a confirmation on him reviving his pet project Marudhanayagam too. There were regular intervals with respect to the release of Superstar Rajinikanth’s films and working style. But now, fans can now enjoy watching Thalaivar in Kabali next year and in Enthiran 2.0 in 2017. Suriya, who is awaiting the release of 24 in January, currently has Singam 3 and Trivikram’s untitled bilingual project too, which might take off later next year. Similarly, Vikram who often maintains a considerable gap between his films has two projects lined up — under the direction of Anand Shankar and Thiru, despite he having two releases this year. Actors like Dhanush, Sivakarthikeyan, Vijay Sethupathi and Jiiva who are basking in the success their films, also have multiple promising projects.
This trend will promise no lesser than a festival sort of atmosphere for avid movie buffs. There have been instances when actors and actresses were replaced in the last minute owing to date issues. Does this happen only because films start only when heroes complete other assignments? Nikki Galrani who recently opted out of Jiiva-starrer Kavalai Vendaam, says that walking out of a project need not necessarily mean someone’s at fault. She says, “I had to move out from Kavalai Vendaam because I couldn’t allot the newly given dates. There were casting changes and as a result shooting was postponed, But it’s common in the showbiz industry and we can’t blame anyone for it. I personally feel that at the end of the day, you will get what was meant for you.”
Meanwhile, it is also said that signing back-to-back films can create an impression that the stars are in demand. Producer Rajeev Kamineni says that there isn’t any concern if there is a proper planning. He says, “Until and unless the production companies do not suffer in any ways it is good for them to sign more films. It will benefit the industry too in the long run. This in turn will bring an image that there are producers ready to bankroll movies keeping their stardom in mind which is a boost for them.”
