For Bengaluru-based brother-sister duo, Ambi and Bindu Subramaniam, their recently launched music video, Days In the Sun is a milestone of sorts. Born to the legendary violinist, L Subramaniam, the siblings are no strangers to the stage, having started performing at six years old. However, this is their first release together and the pair is understandably thrilled about it. Christened SubraMania, the two-member team creates the most addictive tunes that fall under the Contemporary World Music genre.
“Days In The Sun is a song that we wrote on the day our mentor passed on. So it reflects a lot of that emotion, which is quite intense. Apart from being our first video together, it was also a new experience shooting a video in an outdoor location. We were out of our comfort zones and it took some getting used to,” begins Ambi, who follows in the footsteps of his father by being a supremely talented violinist.
Set in the picturesque environs of Hampi, Bindu shares that the location was chosen for its landscape and the way it fit perfectly with the theme of the song. “Hampi is a breathtakingly beautiful place but it also reflects loss and desolation, which is what the song is all about,” explains the singer-songwriter who recently married folk / fusion band, Swarathma's Sanjeev Nayak.
A self-confessed cricket obsessive, Ambi reveals that between creating new music, recordings and performances he has little time left for anything else, but ‘the gentleman’s game’ is something he can’t ignore. “I spend a little too much of my time on cricket,” confesses Ambi who was born in America, but moved to Bengaluru with his father and siblings in 1995.
Talking about growing up with stalwarts like his father and stepmom Kavita Krishnamurti, a playback singer, Ambi says he loved every minute of it. “We were growing up surrounded by music and talented artistes... Not just our parents but their friends too. I wouldn’t trade it for anything,” he says.
Influenced by the likes of jazz artiste Ella Fitzgerald and rock outfit Lifehouse, it’s no wonder that Bindu’s style is an eclectic mix of genres that is clearly a hit with music lovers. “I’m a singer and Ambi is a violinist and pianist. I was performing fusion music and he was doing a lot of classical work. And we wanted to perform together, so we created a genre that both of us were comfortable with. That’s how SubraMania was born,” explains Bindu.
With travel always on their minds (New Zealand and Canada being two of their most loved countries for their open spaces and local culture), it’s only fitting that the duo begins 2016 with a performance tour of Europe, spanning Spain, Luxembourg, Brussels, Italy and Netherlands.
