WARANGAL: Free legal services existed in India before it got independence. A team of Indian lawyers gave free legal services to freedom fighter Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose and from then free legal services were started in India, said Justice Sujoy Paul of the Telangana High Court.

Justice Paul was speaking at the Legal Services Day celebrations held by the district legal cell authority at the Ambedkar Bhavan in Hanamkonda on Saturday. He said that the kind of judicial system that existed in India was also liked by the British.

Justice Paul said that since Anganwadi and ASHA workers and members of self-help groups (SHGs) would be in constant in touch with the people living in villages, the legal cell authority must make arrangements to provide free legal services through them to the people.

In Nizamabad and Kamareddy districts, a new system called community mediation was established which was working efficiently and resolving disputes by mediating between the parties. The members of the legal cell authorities, by involving people, should work from the ground level providing services to people along with conducting programmes.

In the past, people never heard the word divorce in society and they never stepped into court seeking divorce. But in present days, it has become very common.

By mediating between husband and wife and counselling them, steps were being taken by the legal cell authority to help them live a happy married life, he added.

State legal cell authority secretary Panchakshari, Warangal unit chairman B.V. Nirmala Githamba, Hanamkonda unit chairman C.H. Ramesh Babu, collectors Satya Sharada and Praveenya and police commissioner Ambar Kishor Jha were present.
