Emraan Hashmi has had a poor run at the box office the last few years. After The Dirty Picture in 2011, none of his films that followed made big moolah at the box office, despite some good performances by the actor.

Hamari Adhuri Kahani, Mr X, Ungli and Raja Natwarlal — all sank at the box office without a trace. But that seems to have changed with his latest sports biopic Azhar, which has earned him praises for his acting as well as gotten the cash registers ringing at the box office.

The film’s day one collection has been better than his last releases over the past five years. The strong word of mouth further helped garner a higher weekend collection, which touched approximately Rs 20 crore.

Says the actor, “When we make a film, I don’t know which way it is headed. I’d much rather just hope for the best. I am happy that Azhar is doing well and has been appreciated. The industry is fair game and I’m glad that our hard work has paid off, as this film has been one of the most challenging in my career. Hope to have the continued love and support of my fans.”
