'Why should I play a granny', says 'Badhaai Ho' actress Neena Gupta

Mumbai: The year 2018 proved to be a real game changer for veteran actress Neena Gupta. Her film Badhaai Ho saw her back in action and also, in a way, breathed new life into her career.
However, the actress isn’t satisfied with just this one performance and is thirsting for more interesting roles. Neena Gupta says, “I hope I get more good roles now after the success of Badhaai Ho. I am hoping somebody will write something for me as the quest for good roles will always be there.”
The actress, who also did the film The Last Color and was highly appreciated for her performance says that there is still a gender bias when it comes to roles in the industry.
“I feel things are changing and the way this year has passed by, it seems that much older women will get substantial roles. Men of my age are still playing the heroes and when I am approached to play a granny’s role I question them as to why should I play a granny. I hope things will change now,” said the 59-year-old actress.
She further added, “Having said that, I have few offers, which are the lead roles and are very nice. It is not the typical character roles. I would like to do what Meryl Streep does in Hollywood. Even Shabana is doing some good stuff. I hope I too have a good fortune and will get to do it.”
