Chennai: The II Additional Principal Family Court, Chennai, has granted decree of divorce to actor Amala Paul and director A.L Vijay on Tuesday.

The couple, married on June 12, 2014, have been living separately since March 3, 2015 following difference of opinion among them.

In August last year, they appeared separately before principal family court, Chennai and filed the petition for divorce by mutual consent under Section 13 (b) of Hindu Marriage Act and set in motion the divorce proceedings.

The six-month statutory juicial separation period started for the couple commenced on filing the divorce petition.

Actor Amala Paul made her debut in a Tamil film ‘Veerasekaran’ and she shot into fame for her performance in ‘Mynaa’. She acted with leading Tamil film heroes Vikram in “Deiva Thirumagal” in 2011, Vijay in “Thalaivaa” in 2013. Both the films were directed by A.L. Vijay, son of a yesteryear film producer A.L. Alagappan.

During the filming of Thalaivaa, they became friends. She also acted in several Tamil, Malayalam and Telugu films. Vijay directed several films including Poi Solla Porom in 2008, Madrasapattinam in 2010, Thaandavam in 2012 and Devi in 2016.

After their wedding, they were residing in a house at Boat Club.  As Amala Paul continued to act in films after marriage, differences of opinion cropped up among them. Citing “compatibility issues” as the reason for divorce, they filed the divorce petition before Family Court.

When the matter came up for hearing before II Additional Principal Family Court, the district Judge Irusan Poonguzhali, granted decree of divorce to them on Tuesday as they completed the six-month statutory judicial separation period.
