Director Rajkumar Periasamy, an erstwhile assistant to director AR Murugadoss is stepping foot in K’town with his debut directorial titled Rangoon. This action crime-thriller features Gautham Karthik, Sana Makbul, Daniel Annie Pope and Prashant Nair in lead roles.

Recently, the teaser of Rangoon was released on YouTube and has clocked in over one million views. Speaking to DC, Rajkumar says, “Only after watching the teaser did people express interest in knowing about the content that is dealt with in the film. When I completed the movie, I intended to depict the life of Gautham Karthik’s character in the teaser and that’s what we have delivered as well. I’m happy with the response the teaser has received so far.”

The first-time director reveals that he worked on the script for 27 days. “I had to do a lot of research on the topic of smuggling before writing the screenplay. I had listened to a lot of stories about them and it helped me complete the script soon. Of course, I had to add cinematic elements to the script so that it would appeal to the audience,” he adds. The director also put forth the fact that any artform should have credibility and realism in it and Rangoon would live by it.

Rajkumar discloses that the title Rangoon is an emotion. “It is not just the place where Gautham Karthik and his team are heading to; it has a deeper meaning to it. Gautham does petty jobs in his area and stumbles on a smuggling assignment with his friends. He was my first choice for the movie and he has done a fantastic job. Sana essays the role of a bar singer. Every character in the movie has a purpose and won’t appear just for the sake of it.”

Rangoon which is awaiting a go ahead by the censor board was predominantly shot in Chennai while few portions were short in Burma.
