The Madras High Court has scheduled a hearing for January 8, regarding actor Dhanush's lawsuit against actress Nayanthara, her husband and filmmaker Vignesh Shivan, and Netflix's Indian entity, Los Gatos Production Services India LLP. The suit alleges unauthorized use of footage from the 2015 film "Naanum Rowdy Dhaan" in the Netflix documentary "Nayanthara: Beyond the Fairytale."
Dhanush's production company, Wunderbar Films, which produced "Naanum Rowdy Dhaan," claims that clips from the film were used in the documentary without proper authorization, constituting a copyright infringement. Prior to filing the lawsuit, Dhanush had issued a legal notice demanding ₹10 crore in damages for the alleged unauthorized use.
In response, Nayanthara released an open letter expressing surprise at the legal action, stating that the documentary's team had sought permission to use the footage for over two years without success. She noted that despite multiple requests, Dhanush declined to grant a No Objection Certificate (NOC), leading them to proceed without the specific clips. Nayanthara emphasized that the disputed footage amounted to a mere three-second clip, reportedly shot on personal devices.
The court has directed Nayanthara, Vignesh Shivan, and Netflix to file their responses by January 8, when the case will be further examined.
