While romance, comedy, horrors and thrillers rule the big screen, heavy dosages of family dramas and emotional acts rule television soaps. Furthermore, it is the siblings who are taking the spotlight in Kannada television at present. They are hot favourites for serial makers who are spinning the drama around this special bond, giving the TV channels, the much needed extra mileage, earning TRPs (television rating points) for their survival amidst stiff competition. Almost every existing Kannada serial is webbed around ‘siblings’. Bengaluru Chronicle reports.

“Almost every tele-serial at present has a separate plot relating to siblings, be it between the elder brother and younger sister or between sisters. They run parallelly to the main plot of vengeance and revenge seeking acts which never seem to end. In Kinnari, it is between two sisters, as the elder is jealous of her younger one. While in Radha Kalyana, the bond between Raman and Avani is actually the backbone of the series even though on paper, it is about the chemistry between Radha and Raman, the two main characters. In Gattimela, the story revolves around four sisters. The list continues with many including Mithuna Rashi, Kulavadhu, Agnisakshi and many more,” says television writer Chetan.

In fact, in Radha Kalyana, the Avani episode is being dragged eternally for its popularity. “The concept is an age old one but the audience seems to like it. The two, brother and sister are separated during childhood and the search for the sister continues. At present, the suspense over the real sister has kept the curiosity going on for the telly audience,” says TV analyst Sree Harsha.

Whereas serials like Kinnari and Mithuna Rashi highlights jealousy. Gattimela showcases the happy bonding between the four loving sister. “Such stories may not always work for films but it is a sure hit on television. The main target audience being women, no other bond such as the ones revolving around siblings would keep them coming back for more. However, the extreme melodrama makes it ‘indigestible’,” signs off director Bhushan Kumar.
