No doubt that after man’s best friend dog, it is the snake which has been ruling the Indian entertainment industry as the most preferred reptile for decades on both silver and small screen. When it took a semi human form, it became an instant success which still continues to ‘charm’ the audience on television. One such charming actress who plays the most loved ‘snake woman’ Naagini on Zee Kannada has been on top of the game for over three years. Actress Deepika Das who started her acting career through movies is a celebrity amongst real celebrities who rarely miss to watch her serial Naagini. The actress in conversation with Bengaluru Chronicle speaks about her accidental role which earned her stardom, and also her new movie Chowkattu, a thriller which just got launched, and much more.
“Apart from studies, I was always involved in extracurricular activities since my childhood during school and college days. I would be part of cultural activities, arts, dance and plays. I even got into modelling, and this is when my loved ones pushed me to take up bigger roles and thus the attempt to enter the entertaining industry kicked off. I began by joining the movie industry and never had any idea about getting into television,” says Deepika Das.
While she was happily focussing on a career in Sandalwood, Deepika got a call from the makers of Naagini to play the female lead.
“Frankly speaking, I was initially reluctant to take up television. It was never on my mind and in fact I had almost given up the idea, as I wanted to continue my journey in film industry. But when the makers stressed that it was going to be a one-of-its kind serial in Kannada television with making and reach to be on par with any movie, I thought of giving it a try. Now, with three years into it, I have never even for once regretted my decision. It has earned me more than what I could have asked for,” she shares.
It is a not just the television audience but even the celebrities including rebel star Ambareesh who watches Deepika perform without fail on a regular basis. “I feel so happy that it is even watched by many such stars including Ambareesh sir. When I heard about it for the first time, I was over the moon. We, the entire Naagini crew recently celebrated his birthday. It was such a memorable moment for me. Also, it makes it even more special that apart from audiences of all ages, it is the children who also love the show,”Deepika adds.
Meanwhile, the actress who hails from Hassan district recently completed her graduation in BCA through correspondence, will be making her re-entry into movies after a gap of almost three years.
“Though it has been three years, I enjoy being part of Naagini serial. The making of it including the technical aspects of shooting of important sequences abroad has been great. Meanwhile, I have taken up the movie Chowkattu which is again a female oriented subject which comes with a thriller,” she reveals.
She wraps up saying that she will be seen in another new avatar in the thriller performing the martial art Kalaripayattu in Chowkattu. We wish Deepika the best.
