A splash of colour
Little Strokes, an exhibition by students of Art in Art is underway at Durbar Art Gallery in Kochi and will conclude today.
When children dream, they do it in sunny shades. That is why they happily paint a pink elephant, red monkey or green cow. As they grow up, their colour sense might evolve — they would learn about which colour to paint where; but, their world would still be a splash of bright hues. One could witness this beautiful world of colours at Little Strokes, an exhibition of paintings by a group of students of Art in Art, an art school in Kochi.
The show, which began on September 29, contains more than 50 paintings by 25 students. This is the sixth edition. It has no single theme. Students have taken subjects of their taste. That makes the show enjoyable. You can see plenty of images these children have come across in their world — real and virtual.
“From five-year-olds to 17-year-olds, the show depicts various thoughts of children studying at the art school run by Seema Suresh teacher,” says Liju, parent of a participant. “My daughter Varsha’s three works are exhibited here. One is a peacock. She has also done a landscape and a portrait of two Egyptian women,” he adds.
Predominantly portraits and landscapes, a few subjects depicted in the show include childhood, birds, animals, river, home, village, fruits, mother and child, aquatic life, and automobiles. One child has made a mural painting.
They may have done it with guidance from parents or teachers. However, to some extent, these images indirectly tell the spectators what our younger generation yearns for. Like us, they too wish for a green and peaceful land.
The show has a charity side too. “Fifty per cent from the sale would go to popular oncologist Dr V.P. Gangadharan's Cochin Cancer Society that helps poor cancer patients,” says Liju. Little Strokes will be open till October 1 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
