Kollam: In an inspirational effort to acquire knowledge beyond textbooks, the little students of a Government school in Kollam have come up with a novel kind of school magazine totally different from the conventional style. The magazine ‘For Next’ by the students of Pattathanam Government SNDP UP School here has an all-new design and covers a single topic in each edition which helps them to have an in-depth knowledge of a topic.

“This is an effort to make sure the students are determined to find their own ways to explore knowledge beyond the four walls of classrooms. The magazine will have a common topic for each edition for which the students themselves will conduct research and collect information. The magazine also carries independent articles by the students along with their perspective on current affairs,” D. Jayakrishnan, PTA member of the school, told DC.

As the name ‘For Next’ suggests, the magazine is published keeping the next generation in mind. Being compatible with the reading style of the current generation, the magazine has concise and to the point articles, brevity being the mantra. “The magazine has been designed in a way that the entire contents could be read in less time, say 10 minutes. The layout too has been changed from the conventional style and is in landscape form,” Mr. Jayakrishnan added.

Making sure the topics covered in the magazine reach each and every student in the school, special competition items including quiz programmes are conducted based on these topics.

The first edition of the magazine published in October carried a complete package on famous Indian English writers. The students contributed write-ups on their favourite authors apart from short stories, poems, travelogues, and an introduction to ‘The Man Booker Prize’. The upcoming edition has been planned to be covering the topic ‘Cartoonists of India’ for which the students have already started their exploration.
