Central Team to Visit AP to Examine Venkatagiri Saris for Initiative

Anantapur: The Central government has selected Dharmavaram Silk Saris from the Satya Sai district for government-sponsored promotion under the One-District-One-Product (ODOP) scheme.

A product selected under this scheme will get the government’s support for capacity building, promotions, exhibitions, and GI-tagging.

Invest India’s representative Haripreeth Singh, who arrived at Dharmavaram on Sunday, will present this certificate and interact with handloom weavers and other clusters at Dharmavaram Municipal Office on Monday.

Haripreeth Singh will also visit silk dyeing and weaving units at Dharmavaram.

Handloom and textiles Assistant Director Ramesh Babu said Haripreeth Singh will also visit the weavers colony at Somandepalli mandal headquarters which also produces silk saris under the Dharmavaram brand.

The district produces around Rs 1,000 crore worth sari production every year.

Sreenivasulu, a weaver from Muddireddypalli, expressed his gratitude to the central government for recognising the Dharmavaram brand.

Similarly, officials expect the Centre to select the Venkatagiri saris under this scheme from Tirupati district.

The saris, which are named after Venkatagiri town, where it is majorly weaved, have over 300 years of legacy. Today, thousands of families in Venkatagiri, Paturu, and Nellore Rural weave this type of saris with the double-sided Jandani work and Changavi coloured cotton sarees.

According to Tirupati district collector K. Venkataramana Reddy, Invest India team headed by Jigisha Tiwari Mishra will visit the Venkatagiri region for a comprehensive examination of handloom products.

The Invest India team is expected to meet artists on October 17.
