Cosmetic surgery and selfies are two phenomena that have become increasingly intertwined and prevalent in recent times. This tendency, that can be described as selfie surgery, has been going up rapidly with high demand for surgeries resulting from selfies particularly among the youth.

The popularity of social media platforms like Instagram, Snapchat, and TikTok have defined new standards and norms of beauty with increased focus on one’s look and appearance.  This phenomenon has led to an increased demand for procedures such as rhinoplasty (nose job), lip augmentation, facial contouring, and other treatments that can potentially enhance selfie aesthetics.

The youth today use social media to showcase their appearance and gain validation and attention from others. People often look for ways to enhance their appearance and gain more likes and followers. Another reason for rising selfie surgeries is that people want to look their best in selfies and in other photos they post online. They dislike certain aspects of their appearance and feel cosmetic surgery would help them craft the look that they seek. For example, they might want to get a nose job to improve the appearance of their face or they might want to get breast implants to enhance their body contours.

However, what we need to recognize is that social media can be a double-edged sword. While it can provide a platform for self-expression and creativity, it can also create unrealistic beauty standards and expectations that can affect the mental health of the person. Body dysmorphia is a mental health condition that causes people to get obsessed about their looks. Social media has also created a culture of comparison and competition. People are constantly comparing themselves to others online, and this can lead to feelings of inadequacy and low self-esteem.

Before considering cosmetic surgery, it’s important to first explore other options such as makeup, photo editing apps or simply improving one’s photography skills to take better selfies. While cosmetic surgery can help enhance one's appearance, it's not a quick-fix solution. Cosmetic surgery is a serious medical procedure that carries risks and potential complications. It's important to have realistic expectations and to consult with qualified and reputed plastic surgeons who can advise on the best course of action based on individual needs and goals.

As expertise comes with experience, a good cosmetic surgeon will always ensure to assess the patient's needs and goals and recommend the best course of action to achieve the desired results while minimizing the risks and complications associated with the procedure.
