Those distinguished men and their marvellous motorbikes
Vintage motorcycles will vroom through Chennai’s streets to support prostate cancer research
The streets of Chennai will soon see a parade of classic and vintage-style bikes as part of one of the biggest fundraiser bike rides in the world. The 'Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride', a parade held in over 650 cities across 95 countries, aims to raise awareness and funds for prostate cancer research and men’s mental health. It is scheduled to happen in the city this Sunday. It is being held under the aegis of The Movember Foundation, an international fundraising organisation.
The organisers say, "It is not a ride just for men, as it has many women participating on their motorcycles too, in support of the men in their lives.” The Chennai edition of The Distinguished Gentlemen's Ride started six years ago with a handful of bikers dressed in suits meeting at a coffee shop on Harrington Road. Fast forward to the present - the event has become Chennai's biggest motorcycle event. The riders will start gathering at 6.00 a.m. at Pheonix Marketcity and the ride will start at 7.30 a.m. It will culminate at Four Points Sheraton.
Over 55 Motorcycling Clubs in Chennai are collaborating in the event and will be participating in the ride this year.
"Preparations for the ride have been in full swing for the past week. More than 90 bikers have volunteered from different clubs to organise the event. It doesn't make any sense to ride during the peak morning hours, considering the weather. So that's why we decided to start early. Early morning rides are common among passionate bikers," says a member of The Distinguished Gentlemen's Ride group.
Sabari Nair, Center Director of Phoenix Marketcity says, "It is a commendable effort to raise awareness and funds for prostate cancer research and men's mental health. We always look forward to hosting such events with a noble purpose." The event is completely free and does not have any entry tickets.
The venue will have over 15 customized motorcycles built in Chennai on display and will be showcasing the art and talent of bike builders from the city.Prizes will be given under various categories such as Most Distinguished Gentleman, Lady, Couple, Beard, Moustache, and Bike.
