Oh so high & low!
Overlapped and draped to create dramatic new dimensions, the asymmetric hemline is the new seasonal winner.
The asymmetrical hemline is making the rounds in the fashion sphere yet again! Shilpa Shetty was recently spotted at an awards show flaunting the style too. This is one trend that has been well absorbed for ethnic wear as much as Western wear. Although asymmetrical necklines such as the one-shoulder and the off-shoulder have been all the rage this season, you definitely need to take a look at this one. The likes of this style have also been spotted on celebrities like Deepika Padukone and Parineeti Chopra.
“Asymmetry makes your outfits just a bit more interesting from the point of view of design,” says Aloka D’souza. The length of the hemline is the key to detail here, as the different lengths can make all the difference for the overall look. She says, “Pay attention to the lengths of the hemline as they matter when it comes to your individual body type. Extreme hemlines with a short cropped front and a long flare work better on someone with a taller physique. Subtler lengths will work the best for everyone.”
This trend tops the list for affordable fashion. The shorter front and the flowing long back has been adapted to suit anarkalis and kurtas as much as dresses and skirts. Deepta Raghunath, a city-based designer says, “Oversized silhouettes are in right now and this works well for the asymmetrical hemline. With a loose fit, this style works very well with everyone as it is convenient and comfortable for the weather we have right now.”
For an everyday look Miriam Browne, a city-based stylist says, “Pair an overlap dress with a small slit which is a lovely casual look. You could experiment with chunky or asymmetrical jewellery or a cute bag.”
The material that you choose for your asymmetrical outfit is, as Aloka adds, “Soft flowy materials like chiffon and georgette are ideal for this event.” An asymmetrical hemline outfit like a tunic or kurta looks best when paired with tapered bottoms that balance the outfit. “Tapered figurette or ankle length pants suit asymmetrical hemlines well. Since this trend is mostly comfort oriented, leggings work well too,” adds Deepta.
