The word “chain” might evoke thoughts of bikers and bondage but the season’s chains, from straps to trim, are much more varied and often more subtle than you’d first guess. Enter the world of chunky accented chain bags that range from ladylike at Tory Burch and Oscar de la Renta to tough at Versace and Loewe.

These chunky, badass links covered most of the accessories at many fashion month mainstays, from Alexander Wang to Louis Vuitton. Since we are going maximalist when it comes to accessories, more is more, so why not pile on the chains too? Sure, your bag may be a little heavier, but we say it’s worth it.

You can also reinvent the bags you already own by taking out its straps and replacing them with your own old unused chains, necklaces and chunky metal belts. The body of a bag doesn’t have to be the only part that’s interesting. Instead, have some fun with the straps.

Chain bags are also a more traditional style, so you can get away with a wilder print, a more off-kilter shape or a trendy colour and have good faith that your bag will feel cool to you for a long time.

The metallic glint of a chain contrasts nicely with the animal-printed calf hair of any mini bag or choose to go for a tough, modern, oversized matte black chain on a large duffel. But if you like to be all feminine and girlie, you can choose a chain that has vintage and artistic charm.
